Riding in Cayo Guillermo, Cuba

We headed to Cuba in April for 2 weeks of non-stop kiting. It was my first time on the OR Venturi Rise and the Mako Wide - and I credit the gear and conditions for taking my flat water riding to a new level (blinds and back rolls). Surprisingly, I didn't really need my 9m, although I did use it thanks to its massive low end power. It was paradise - we're going back for sure!

There's nothing like a kite beach that keeps the kite widow and kite orphans happy!! The Villa Cojimar is made up of bunglaows lining a gorgeous shallow beach with super warm water, white sand, palm trees and sea shells--the kids were busy for hours.

Massages on the beach, what more could a kite widow ask for?!!

Newfoundland Wonderland October 2007

The wilderness in Newfoundland makes you feel small. I didn't get to see any ice bergs or whales - they pass through in the spring. This is Topsail Beach on Conception Bay.

Not the greatest beach surface to launch from - one downfall of riding in Newfoundland, especially for learners. There is a sandy location within one hour of St. John's though. There are also surfable waves on the Atlantic side of the city near Middle Cove.
There was a citizens' beach cleanup going on the day I rode here. Newfoundlanders love and respect their pristine natural environment. We enjoyed a barbeque with steamed mussels and a traditional flute, fiddle and guitar band jamming. Bell island is a folksy party spot in the summers, and is a landmark of marine and mining history.
Little Bell Island in the background is uninhabited but reachable by kite!

Fishing, Kiteboarding and Beach Lunch

So we find this guy on the beach named Salvador who is fishing with a net. He says he has a friend that has a boat and would like to take us fishing. We are in. So yesterday we pack up kids and kites into a fishing boat and head out to the open Ocean. We fish for a few hours and then head back to build a fire and cook our catch. The wind is up and we find a perfect sand peninnsula. Andy, one of our local guildes summons a hammock from the nearby beach and sets it up for our 4 month old. Fantastic service. So there we are with the kids playing on the beach and the girls sitting in the sun and us rippin' up the lagoon. We ride for a hour or so and hit the beach for some fresh fish and salad. This was the best day of the whole trip, everything came together.

Cozumel Hits Off

We are off on another adventure, this time to Isla Cozumel, Mexico for some kiteboarding and beach layin'. We have rented a house right on the beach with our own pool and four bedrooms. We kite from our backyard. Epic spot. Just need more wind. We had one great day and waiting for more.

This is a little bay on the South East side of ARUBA. This was by far the best spot we hit this trip. There was everything surf, slicks and sharks. With the sun setting on the Aruba Corrections Facility we stayed on the water till dark.

This is a Gravel Pit which is next to the Ostrich farm we checked out

This old fort was built right into the rock formations, really neet but I don't really know the history yet.

This is up the beach from Vela a few miles and is a great bay to kite in. Three of us went there this morning. I was not sure where we were going but once we made it by the shipwreck and snorkel boats it was all bay and little rollers.

Sweet Aruba

Well i have been on the water everyday so far. This is a challenging place to ride at first but once you get used to it, the offshore winds aren't bad. I am up at the "Fishing Huts" and wind blows right offshore. The winds are gusty and the lulls can sink you. I have been on the 16m 2008 Rise and Zen Wide board without any trouble. The biggest kite the locals ride here seems to be a 12m but they always seem underpowered. I think that us Canadians are just tougher and can handle bigger kites. I can de-power this Rise all i want with no issues. The winds might be 20 mph but the lulls are about 10-12 mph and that's good to keep going for a 16m while the other guys sink and wait for wind. One guy says he won't ride anything but a 10m and below, anything else and he won't go out. To each their own.

After a week in FLA the weather turns from warm to cold back to hot.
These are shots from the Florida Mall Standing Wave Machine. It was really cool and made me want to buy one, but my neck hurt afterwards from all the face plants. When you loose it, your feet are the first to go, then your head quickly follows.

All the wild animals crawled out for this brisk spring wind in Parksville, BC.

The local riders told me the sea lions were friendly, but I saw how big they are up close at the Vancouver acquarium (they're as big as beluga whales). There must be a reason they're called lions. So I hung a little closer to the beach than I would on fresh water.
First sunburn of the season - note the resemblance between my face and my daughter's shirt. Who cares, I haven't smiled like that in months!

16C warm southerlies gave us one final shot to ride. With our Pyros, we were able to stay in the water for over 4hrs without feeling the slightest chill.

What started out as a conservative ride turned into a pounding freestyle experiment. We took a beating, but rode like there was no tomorrow.

Armed and dangerous on the beaches of Belle River.
The famous Barge is now infamous with a busted motor. But the winds were just enough for a mid-afternoon session just no downwinder.
Kites took over the beach on Sunday at Belle River. We waited all day for wind which was playing with us, but at the end I was able to get out on the OR Diablo 16m. All was not lost.

Cold water = Empty Beaches! The SW winds were steady and powerful as Ash and myself were riding 9m and 12m Ocean Rodeo Ones respectively. The water is still 38 degrees, but with the OR Pyro dry suits, we were warm and dry. I gave the OR Mako 150 another try and loved it, when this board connects in the water you can really drive the edge in hard. It did, for me at least, take a session to get used to, but it was well worth it.

There are about 25 kites up in this small section of the beach, and it wasn't even busy according to locals
Manitoban snow kiteboarder Bill before his first water drag. It was a memorable session - all his lines stayed intact except his loose waist drawstring and his shorts slid off down to one foot!
Laurel Eastman's kite school - home of the KiteFever and LEK brands. Despite all the action, the atmosphere here is mellow and welcoming; even when the adjoining pizza shop caught fire people kept their cool. First priority: evacuate the kites!

Throwing Down at Bass Lake Kite Rodeo '06!

Here's the New Ocean Rodeo ONE kite. It was the inaugural flight for the bow kite which arrived the day before. GREAT KITE!
There was no competition this year so it was up to the riders to set the bar for bigger and better tricks. Here's "Smokey" with a huge raley

It was beautiful sunny day at the Annual Bass Lake Kite Rodeo organized by Dan Medysky from kiterider.ca. We packed up the Yukon and headed out to Bass Lake Provincial Park near Orillia, ON. Saturday morning. Armed with the new Ocean Rodeo One 12m we set up. I had just received the "ONE" kite and New Session harness the day before and was a little nervous about setting it up the for first time at the event, but we rigged up and the results we great! Mike & Ken from Meldmedia also attended and shot some killer footage! Can't wait to see the finished product, thanks guys.

Prime conditions at Bervie

Jessman and Ash cruised for hours in a foot of powder at Bervie, 10 minutes east of Kincardine. This has been our most reliable location with good snow volume and steady winds from most directions. We'll be there again this Sunday, Feb 12th for anybody who wants to try it out.

Winter wasteland

Adam was impressed with the pull of a trainer kite in a snowsquall, and it got him curious about what a real kite feels like. Everyone is finding it easier to learn kiteboarding on snow rather than on water, and it'll give us an edge-up for when the summer season hits.
All the shoreline snow has been blown inland so we've been riding the farmlands around Walkerton - and suprisingly, the winds have been quite stable.

Kiting on Skis and SnowSkates

Shaun makes kiting on skis look easy. I kept burying our Railz snowskate in the light powder, but it works great on well packed snow, and especially on ice. The Railz reps we met at SIA suggested we use a make-shift binding out of bike tire tubes for kite-boarding with their snowskate.

In a rare act of kiting restraint, we left our kites at home this afternoon. The winds were gusting up to 100km/h and it was hard enough just walking down to the water. We should have worn goggles - rain feels like ice when it pelts you in the face moving that fast!

This is such great weather for kiteboarding! Warm & windy. The start of November is one of the warmest on record and we are taking full advantage. I didn't think we would be kiting in November but we are and it's great, even the kite widows (a.k.a fan club) came out for a walk on the beach.

This was a almost direct on shore wind and Jesse and I were going to play with our foils, but the urge hit so we suited up. I didn't do much but as you can see Jess-man had a great wave ride. There are a few big rocks to watch out for but other than that an upwind rider can really enjoy these conditions.

These shots taken in June from a buddy's plane, thanks Rick! This first shot looks south towards Amberley. You can see that when the winds are offshore or South at home (foreground) they are side shore on the other side of Amberley.
Boiler Beach, nice spot don't really kite there much lately. Station Beach has more room this time of year (fall) and the piers break the surf when the winds are from the north, but it's a nice place to live.
Very little debris on the beach or in the water, just the odd big rock!!
Boiler Beach - again a great shoreline, clean and quiet.

Hello, I guess we should introduce ourselves, then describe this photo of hopelessness. We are Shaun & Jeff, two kiteboarding enthusiasts that play in the fresh waters of the Great Lakes. Lake Huron's east shoreline is our playground with it's sandy beaches and inquisitive onlookers. See, there aren't too many folks around here like us, but those of us that do partake do so with smiles donning our faces and the knowledge that we are watching each other's back for trouble. There are around five or so guys now but that number has been growing lately.
We have Jess-man, Ash, Stammer, and ourselves, but we don't have any cool nicknames, yet. We have great beaches to travel to for almost every wind condition and are starting to know them better as time goes on. Kincardine's Station Beach for the NW to NE, Amberly for South winds and Ollie for the great butter days you need every once and a while. Now to explain the photo. It was the day after my kite was delivered, Thanksgiving weekend 2003 and I thought I was doing well. :)
